Movies and stories have a very old connection. Throughout the history of films, different movies have come from famous stories, novels and plays all over the world. Hollywood movies are not an exception. There is a reason behind this profound love of Hollywood for good stories. Actually, Hollywood is a kind of industry which always wants to tell stories through their films. They always follow a linear way of story telling. To maintain this linear way, they always search for good stories. In this article, we will talk about those Hollywood movies that are made from existing stories.

Short stories - Dead In The Water Or Alive And Kicking?

The short story genre is one that is thriving – but only in certain places. Where are they?

A short story can be roughly defined as any work of fiction below about 12,000 words. A greater wordcount tends to move the story into the realms of the ‘Novella’ or Novelette’, a niche in the writing field that falls between the short story and the full-blown novel.

For many years the short story was a thriving branch of fiction but took a downturn during the middle section of the 20th. century. More publishers began to favour the novel as, understandably, they saw that a novel gave them more chance of turning a profit than a short story and, at the pinnacle, could be turned into a Hollywood blockbuster. But conside Continue reading »

Here are a few tips about using the short story Continue reading »

The Art of the Perfect Short Story

I love a short story. A great short story can take me on a ride, deposit me in delicious emotional upheaval, or prompt ongoing thought. Only, not all short stories are a pleasure to read. The truth about short stories is that they can be dull. Yes, they can be self-involved, confusing, predictable, droll, drivel.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m all for writing straight from the heart or the head onto the page; it can be therapeutic in wonderful ways. But I’m not talking about that type of expression here. I’m talking about the stories that a writer wants to put out there in the wider world — publish or have published — not the other stories. Those stories should stay firmly put, at home in a journal; writt Continue reading »

How to Make Dialogue Bring Your Story to Life

What your characters do throughout the story forms the backbone of what your tale is about. But it’s what they say and how they say it that puts the flesh and muscle on the bone. Here are some tips on how to add that extra something to your dialogue.

I’m not decrying narrative description, which is essential, but it’s far better to show the reader what’s happening through your character’s dialogue, when it’s acceptable to do so, than relying too much on descriptive passages.

Take this, for example:

Debbie got out of the car and stared at the building in front of her.

‘I don’t know that I like the look of that’, she said as Grant came round and stood with her. ‘It looks like Continue reading »

Don't Loose Readers, Get the Narrative and Dialogue Balance Right

Do your readers loose consciousness ploughing through pages of narrative description? Or are they perplexed and bewildered because your snappy dialogue leaves them wondering just who is talking to whom? It’s time to get your narrative/dialogue balance right. Here’s how.

Modern readers in general prefer a story that moves along with a fair degree of alacrity. If not, they soon get bored, and when that happens your novel is history. That’s today’s book reader for you; spoon fed on fast action films and TV with perhaps little time to read anyway. But maybe the readers you are aiming at are more relaxed and cerebral and are quite at home with a slower paced tale. But which is right for you and your readers?
